Seminar: Evaluation of Mycobacterium komossense JERR01 as a possible model organism for studies on resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis
6 November, 2025The Instituto de Ciencias Médicas (ICM) concluded the year 2025 with a total of 22 scientific publications in international indexed journals, consolidating its position as one of Panama’s leading biomedical research centers, with the highest scientific output per researcher for five consecutive years since 2021.
Among the research published in 2025, several high-impact studies stand out at both the national and international levels, addressing key areas such as genetics, public health, epidemiology, microbiology, and chronic diseases, including:
-
An unusual profile of germline genetic variants in colorectal cancer patients from a high-prevalence region in Panama.
-
Global, regional, and national burden of sepsis, including incidence and mortality trends from 1990 to 2021.
-
The global burden of chronic kidney disease, its attributable risk factors, and its evolution through 2023.
-
Global analysis of overweight and obesity in adults, children, and adolescents, with projections to 2050.
-
Acute and chronic care needs based on data from the Global Burden of Disease Study.
-
Multidrug-resistant phenotypes and antimicrobial resistance gene profiles of Escherichia coli isolated from healthy animals in Panama.
-
The APOE ε4–uric acid axis as a pathophysiological basis of Mesoamerican nephropathy, providing innovative evidence on this emerging disease.
These studies were published in high-impact, internationally prestigious scientific journals, including The Lancet (and its specialized editions), Nature Medicine, Nature Communications, Genes, Letters in Applied Microbiology, and Cureus, reaffirming the scientific excellence, academic leadership, and international visibility of the Instituto de Ciencias Médicas.
The Institute also recognizes the work of its researchers who are members of Panama’s National Research System (SNI), whose commitment, discipline, and scientific leadership have been fundamental in positioning the Instituto de Ciencias Médicas as the research center with the highest number of indexed scientific publications per researcher in the country.
